Following the success of our Career Readiness Initiative (CRI) in increasing postsecondary enrollment rates at Edison and Roosevelt high schools, we’ve now expanded CRI to serve students at The FAIR School Downtown, Patrick Henry High School and South High School.
CRI was launched in 2016 in our Edison and Roosevelt Career & College Centers (CCCs) to both deepen and expand the career advising we provide for students. Our CRI team guides students in identifying high-wage, family sustaining careers they’re interested in, connects them with employers who are looking for young talent, and supports them in enrolling in the best postsecondary programs for these fields. This can include two or four-year degrees, technical school, in-house training, certificate programs, apprenticeships and other opportunities.
Over the last two years, postsecondary enrollment by seniors at Edison and Roosevelt outpaced growth at other Minneapolis public high schools, suggesting that by providing additional advising, connections and support, more seniors can create an actionable plan to achieve their career and college dreams.
In additional to providing personalized advising, our CRI team also brings a wide variety of companies, industries and education organizations into our high schools to connect with students one-on-one through career speed-networking, career rep visits, informational interviews, career pathway fairs and career speakers events. We also facilitate worksite tours for students at local companies to see their facilities, meet their staff and learn about career opportunities.
Over 50 businesses, schools and other organizations have participated in these CRI activities, including Buhler, Inc., Cargill, Dakota County Technical College, Deloitte, Elevate Minnesota, Ernst & Young, Fairview Health Services, Finishing Trades Institute, Graco, Medtronic, Minneapolis College, Minnesota State Transportation Center of Excellence, Target, United Health Group, UPS, Xcel Energy and many others.
